Congress heavyweights in Lok Sabha fray

BANGALORE, Mar 31 : Sending a message that tantrums won’t be entertained, the Congress high command released the list of candidates on Saturday. Warhorse C K Jaffer Sharief will contest from Bangalore North and H T Sangliana from Bangalore Central. Tejaswini Gowda will take on H D Kumaraswamy in Bangalore Rural.

The party announced candidates for 22 seats. Nominees for Bangalore South, Mandya, Chikballapur, Udupi-Chikmagalur, Uttara Kannada and Chamarajanagar are yet to be finalized.

The JD(S) announced a list of 16 and left Dakshina Kannada and Udupi-Chikmagalur to the communists. Former PM Deve Gowda is seeking re-election from Hassan. Though it has not worked out an alliance with the Congress, JD(S) is unlikely to field candidates in some constituencies or nominate a few weak ones.

The BJP has held back announcement of its candidates for Bangalore Rural, Chikballapur, Mandya and Bangalore North. It is trying to net disgruntled Congress leaders to be fielded here.

Giving the go-by to Rahul Gandhi’s suggestion of 30% tickets to youths, the Congress list includes Bangarappa (Shimoga), Dharam Singh (Bidar), Mallikarjun Kharge (Gulbarga) and Janardhana Poojary (Dakshina Kannada). It has rewarded Manjunath Kunnur (Dharwad), a BJP MP who voted in favour of N-deal.
