Congress "suprised" over BJP not pulling out Varun from contest

Bangalore , Mar 20: Congress said today it was"surprised"that the BJP has not withdrawn the candidature of Varun Gandhi from Pilbhit Lok Sabha constituency for his reported speech targetting Muslims.

"I am surprised that no senior BJP leader has condemned it or withdrawn his (Varun's) candidature", Congress spokesperson, Jayanti Natrajan told media here.

Reacting to the alleged communal speech of Varun Gandhi at Philbit, she said the Congress condemned it.

Terming it"unfortunate and unconstitutional", she said it reflected the"BJP politics of hate and divisiveness".

It was upto the Election Commission to take action with regard to Varun&aposs speech, Natarajan said.

On the RJD-LJP decision to contest 39 Lok Sabha seats in Bihar leaving just three seats to the Congress, she said the"current circumstances"was not of the Congress&aposmaking.

Replying to a question whether the decision of the Congress to contest 26 seats would lead to any fall out or division, Natarajan said,"if there is any divisiveness, it is not of our making".
