The Congress has admitted that it needs to strengthen its position in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar if it wants its own candidate as the next prime minister.
“If the party wants to make a Congress candidate the prime minister, it needs to strengthen its position in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar,” Congress General Secretary and party in-charge for Uttar Pradesh Digvijay Singh told a news channel in an interview.
Stressing on the importance of a favourable electoral outcome from UP for the party, Singh said, “In UP, there is a population of around 18 crore, 80 parliament seats and more than 70 districts. So, to get a winning majority in Uttar Pradesh, we need time.”
Singh said that his party favours Congress-SP alliance to fight BSP and BJP in UP.
The former Madhya Pradesh chief minister is hoping to do well in his home state where his party holds only four out of the total 29 Lok Sabha seats while BJP has the rest 25.
“If we talk about Madhya Pradesh, it is not like that (like UP and Bihar). We hold a good position there even today also,” Singh, popularly known as ‘Diggi Raja’ said.
