Lapang, however, refused to divulge details of the 20-minute meeting, saying it was “a secret”. Asked whether Meghalaya would see a leadership change, Lapang said, “Congress president Sonia Gandhi will decide it.”
The CM claimed there was no dissidence in the party. “We are one family. It is a family feud and our parents in Delhi will solve it,” he said.
The Congress leadership, which is reportedly in favour of Lapang continuing as CM, has given him more time to garner support of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP), sources said, adding Deputy CM Mukul Sangma and Speaker Charles Pyngrope could replace Lapang, “if he fails to muster majority in the CLP”.
Fourteen of the 28 Congress MLAs in the 60-member Assembly had on April 7 faxed a letter to Sonia Gandhi, seeking Lapang’s ouster as he had “lost support of the majority of the CLP members”.
The rebel MLAs are reportedly disgruntled with Lapang for not making them ministers.
