Congress core group meets on Anna

New Delhi: With Anna Hazare refusing to leave Tihar Jail, the core group of the Congress party met Wednesday morning to chart out the next course of action. The core group meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, is being attended by senior party leaders like Pranab Mukherjee, AK Antony, P Chidambaram and Ahmed Patel. Importantly, party general secretary Rahul Gandhi, as per reports, met the Prime Minister prior to the meeting of the Core Group. Rahul is a member of the ‘group of four’ who are overseeing party work in the absence of Sonia Gandhi. Clearly, options before the party and the government are limited given the unrelenting stand taken by Anna and the thousands who are supporting his cause. Rahul had met the Prime Minister, yesterday evening too, and discussed the Anna tangle. As per reports, there is a feeling among party leaders that any furthering hardening of stance may lead the situation getting out of control. 74-year-old Anna Hazare and his activists galvanised support from various parts of India with opposition parties rallying behind him in unison. The social activist and some of his supporters were arrested, yesterday, for breach of peace ahead of a planned fast to press for a strong anti-graft Lokpal Bill. However, the police decided to set him free at around 9 pm but the veteran Gandhian refused to leave the Tihar Jail until he is given permission to hold a fast at JP Park in the capital.
