Congress bags 5 seats, leading in 20 in Meghalaya election

The Congress won five seats and was leading in 20 others in the election to the 60-member Meghalaya Assembly with Chief Minister Mukul Sangma, his wife D D Shira and his brother Zenith Sangma poised for a big win.

Lone woman legislator Ampareen Lyngdoh retained her urban 16 East Shillong seat edging out her nearest rival and former deputy chief minister B M Lanong of the UDP by over 4,000 votes.

Cabinet Ministers H D R Lyngdoh and Prestone Tynsong retained their Sohiong and Pynursla seats respectively.

Lyngdoh won by a margin of over 3,000 votes over his lone rival and UDP candidate B Kharphuli while Tynsong is leading over his nearest rival and UDP candidate B Khongwar by almost 2,000 votes.

The P A Sangma led National Peoples' Party is yet to register any win.

The UDP, which had an alliance with the Congress in the outgoing Assembly, is leading in at least eight seats while the Independents are leading in 10 seats.

His two sons -- Conrad and James -- are trailing behind Congress candidates from Selsella and Dadenggre.

Counting of votes for 60 Assembly seats of Meghalaya, polling for which was held on February 23, began at 8 am today amidst tight security.

"Counting will continue till all results are announced, hopefully before noon," Chief Electoral Officer P Naik said.

The CEO has already directed the district-level officers to ensure fool proof security in and around counting centres.

He said 100 metre periphery of all the 13 counting centres in the state have been declared no-vehicle zone.
