‘Jai ho’ old Congress campaign buzzword: poet

NEW DELHI - As “Jai ho” makes news again - it is in the race to be the millionth English word - few know that it has always been used in the ruling Congress party’s election campaign songs, says well known Hindi poet Ashok Chakradhar.

In fact, Chakradhar was the man tasked with writing the lyrics for the Congress’ poll campaign song which had the words “Jai ho” and the tune for which was based on the Oscar winning song from the movie “Slumdog Millionaire”.
“I wanted to check what kind of campaign songs had been written in the past. And this search took me to Indore where Suman Chaurasia runs a museum. He has 25,000 gramophone records and his collection also included Congress campaign songs since the time of (first prime minister) Jawaharlal Nehru,” Chakradhar told IANS.
“I heard eights songs of the earlier campaigns and was surprised that all songs had ‘Jai ho’ or “Jai jaikar” mentioned in it,” he added.
Chakradhar is pleased that “Jai ho” could become the millionth English word. It is among 73 words like ‘cuddies’ and ’slumdog’ that are competing for the honour.
“If the word is included in the English lexicon, then the importance of Hindi will be recognised worldwide. English will also be enriched.
“Hindi will not only get recognition but would be accepted far and wide. The youth, which these days identifies themselves with English, will feel proud of Hindi too,” said Chakradhar, who specialises in satire and comedy and was earlier head of department in the Hindi department of Jamia Millia Islamia.
About Congress campaign songs, the poet said although there are no dates mentioned, the Congress’ first campaign song was sung by famous Bollywood singers Asha Bhosle and Mahendra Kapoor.
The words were - “Nehru Ki Sarkar Rahegi, Hind Ki Jai Jai Kar Rahegi”. (Nehru would be governing again, India would be praised again and again).
Another campaign song was sung by Mohammed Rafi and the music was given by Shankar Jaikishan. The song was “Kabhi Na Toot Payga, Yeh Unnati Ka Silsila, Yeh Vakt Ki Pukar Hai, Ki Congress Ki Jai Ho”.
“What is interesting is that none of these songs had any negative connotations, or any sort of arrogance. They are all positive campaigns. This struck me and I followed it when I penned the campaign songs this time,” he said.
Chakradhar wrote six campaign songs, of which two were sung by Sukhvinder, who had also given his voice to the original score in the movie.
The “Jai ho” song for the film was written by noted Bollywood lyricist Gulzar and the Congress bought the rights of the song. It earned A.R. Rahman the Oscar for best song and musical score. Gulzar shared the award.

GUWAHATI: It will be "Jai Ho" all over for Tarun Gogoi in Assam, as the Congress there prepares to translate the Slumdog song into four local languages to sing peans in praise of the government’s work.

"The work of modification of the lyric has been handed over to a professional group. It will highlight the achievements of the Tarun Gogoi government in the state during the last eight years" Pankaj Bora, vice president of the Assam pradesh congress committee (APCC) told ET.

The modified Slumdog lyric will be available in Assamese, Bengali, Hindi and Sadri.

Mr Bora said that the party is planning to launch this publicity blitzkreig with 10,000 CDs. The song will of five minutes duration and the cassettes are being produced by APCC. "We have the copyright and accordingly it can be modified in different states to suit respective poll campaigns" Mr Bora said.

Similarly the BJP is also planning to counter the Congress in the state with its coordinator for the northeast, Harendra Pratap saying : "We will launch our campaign song in local languages also to air the failure of the UPA government".

With the poll dates in Assam coinciding with Bihu in spring, several music albums are expected to come up with political tunes. The local music industry expects over 200 Bihu song albums to be released soon, leading up to a total business of around Rs 3 crore.

According to Manas Robin, a noted singer cum composer, Bihu music albums with a political slant may sell well if they are professionally done. "People like to listen to different tunes" he said.

Jai Ho is a favourite for poll dancing

Recently ace director Priyadarshan released his critically acclaimed Kanchivaram in Chennai.

But the director himself wasn’t present at the premiere and press show of the film. Priyan was on a secret mission at his favourite location, Pollachi. He was shooting for the Oscar winner AR Rahman’s foot-tapping music score Jai Ho..., which will be the signature tune of the Congress party’s 2009 election campaign.

Aiming to spice up its election campaign, the Congress party bought the rights of Jai Ho and Priyadarshan was chosen to shoot the video as his film Billu impressed the Congress election strategists. Priyadarshan is known for his brand of filmmaking in which the greenery of Pollachi is highlighted. Healthy white bullocks in the foreground, a swing on which Shah Rukh Khan sat and a top angle shot of the village, everything was colour coordinated to perfection. Sabu Cyril, the art director and Priyan’s close buddy, gave the south Indian location a rich look. However, when contacted, Priyadarshan preferred to remain silent on this project.

According to sources close to the director, Priyadarshan flew to Delhi, met the Congress election campaign managers, Anand Sharma and Jairam Ramesh and worked out the theme of the 30 second to 10 minute campaign spots. The Congress campaign speaks of the party’s heritage and achievements and focuses on key Congress leaders and former prime ministers and is targeted at village folk. The party banks heavily on the Aam Admi. The slogan ‘Aam admi ke badte kadam, har kadam par Bharat bulund’, is the Congress’ theme around which the film was shot with over 1000 junior artists from around the country, to give it an Indian look.
