Sonia Gandhi turns 65

Sonia Gandhi

Gandhi had declared that she would not celebrate her birthday as she does not want outstation party members to come down to Delhi especially for her birthday.

But to make the day special for Gandhi, several party leaders visited Gandhi’s residence 10 Janpath, New Delhi and greeted her on the big day.

Union Ministers Pranab Mukherjee, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Virbhadra Singh, C P Joshi and Pradesh Congress Committee chiefs and AICC office bearers were among those who personally extended birthday greetings to her.

Massive security was in place outside her 10 Janpath residence. The main entrance of her residence, which faces Akbar Road, was blocked and visitors including senior Congress leader Pranab Mukherjee had to walk to greet her.

Among the first callers were DMK leaders including T R Baalu and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi's daughter Kanimozhi.

"We came here only to greet her," Kanimozhi told reporters even as DMK leaders dismissed any political motive to the visit in the wake of the controversy over the 2G spectrum allocation scam and the upcoming assembly polls in Tamil Nadu.

Partymen from Karnataka and Tamil Nadu also joined in the celebrations. They took out processions beating drums in excitement at the residence of Gandhi.

Party workers from all over the country wearing colorful t-shirts and carrying posters of Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, gathered at the Congress headquarter in New Delhi.
